  1. What is the My Legal Assistant Service?
Think of My Legal Assistant as your "Legal Concierge".  Concierge is the French word for one who provides information and special services.  Our California Law Guide, and our FAQ's Database of California legal questions and answers are a great way to find legal information online. However, sometimes even experienced users need help finding exactly the answer they need.  The My Legal Assistant Information Service is a way to get that help from researchers with expertise in online searching.  When you post a question from your personal home page, one of our  researchers will search for the information you want. When they find it, they will post it to your personal home page, and you will be notified via e-mail.  You will have a permanent link on your personal home page so that you can refer back to this question and answer any time you want.  We cannot provide you with legal advice through this service because we are not a law firm - we can provide you with legal information only.  Our service is limited to finding answers from content that is published on the Internet.  We do not undertake specialized off-line research to find answers to your questions.  If we cannot find your answer on the Web using our specialized research tools, we will not be able to provide you an answer to your question and will let you know right away.

Your question may also be publicly viewable in our FAQ's database so other registered users can share the benefit of the research.  Your identity and personal information will not be revealed to either the Researcher or the community of registered users at any time. The Researcher will have access to your e-mail address in order to send you a response.

While our researchers do their best to help with every request, some questions simply don't have clear answers (e.g., "Will I win my case against my landlord?").  It's also possible the answer to your question is simply not available. If you do receive an answer, but are not satisfied with it, you can first request additional research through an "Answer Clarification" request.  If still unsatisfied, you can request to have your question re-posted for a new answer.

The difference between "legal information" and "legal advice" has been defined by a Legal Opinion published by the Attorney General Californiawhich was issued in the context of non-lawyer's providing assistance to victims of domestic violence:

Opinion of the Attorney General.  See generally:  "We have also concluded that the simple act of providing information about legal rights, as opposed to offering advice about such rights and what to do about them, is not unauthorized," from this Opinion.

  4. Where do I find the My Legal Assistant Terms of Service?
The Terms of Service for our Question and Answers can be found at Terms of Service that specifically apply to this Service..
  1. What questions can I ask? Why are questions limited to California divorce law?
You can ask any question that can be answered with words or numbers about California divorce law, but it can't be a request for legal advice. Legal advice is the application of a rule of law to the particular circumstances of your case.  Legal information is a general question a legal procedure or what is the law in a particular subject area.

We don't answer questions about the law of jurisdictions other than California, although we will answer certain questions of Federal law in the area of federal bankruptcy, copyright, and trademark law. You can also ask us to find a particular form for you if it does not appear in our Document Catalog. If it is on the Internet, we can retrieve it for you. We can't tell you which form would apply to your particular circumstances and we can't draft a form for you. Buy you can tell us what you want and if it is on the Net it is likely that our expert researchers will be able to find it.

Legal information is not a substitute for the legal advice of an attorney, but often you will find that simply having access to the correct legal information will help you to solve your legal problem.

  2. And you can revise your question or edit it at any time as long as it is not 'locked' because it is being worked on by a researcher. Most askers are looking for a specific piece of information like, "How do I collect a judgment" or "How many witnesses do I need for a will in California?". Our researchers all have backgrounds in legal research and they are experts in locating hard to find information on the web. If the answer to your question is online, chances are pretty good they'll find it. Again keep in mind that our My Legal Assistant Service is not a substitute for professional advice or services, nor will we knowingly provide answers to assist in illegal activities. We reserve the right to delete questions on a case-by-case basis if they do not comply with our guidelines for "Proper Use," as specified in our Terms of Service.

Who Will Answer My Questions.

  1. Who will answer my question?
Your question will be answered by a Researcher. A Researcher is an attorney or a trained legal assistant. California Divorce Online Researchers are experts at locating hard-to-find information on the web, and through offline resources as well. Researchers must go through an application process that tests their research skills and the quality of their answers. You are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on the quality of the response you receive by ranking the answer returned by the Researcher. Some of our Researchers are attorneys who are members of the California bar, but there role in this service is to provide legal information only, not legal advice. We label our staff, "Researchers" , even though some of them may be attorneys, because they are not holding themselves out as practicing attorneys when they participate in this service.

  2. Can I choose who answers my question?
Currently, you cannot choose who answers your question. California Divorce Online tests all Researchers to ensure that they are expert legal researchers who have experience on researching on the Net.

  3. Are Researchers experts in their field?
All California Divorce Online Researchers are tested to ensure that they are expert searchers in finding legal materials and content on the Internet, and have excellent communication skills.

  2. What if a question doesn't have a clear answer?
Some questions simply don't have clear, straightforward answers that can be answered through an online search or through another reference source (e.g. "Which is prettier - blue or green?"). In such cases, Researchers will attempt to provide links to useful background information on the question.

  3. The Researcher only partially answered my question. How do I get further clarification?
You have the option to make a comment or request a clarification once you receive your answer from a Researcher. To request further clarification, log in and go to "My Account". When you see the list of questions you have asked, click on the question with the answer you wish to clarify. Once you have clicked on the question, look at the top of the page and click on the "Clarify Question" button. Then enter the clarification you desire into the box. The Researcher will be alerted that a clarification has been requested.
